Getting Started!

The first thing you'll need to do is order a
Practice Chanter and Practice Chanter Reed.

We recommend the Dunbar Poly Practice Chanter.  It has a great sound and is virtually indescructible.  Most students would do well to select either the regular or long length models.  You can order one here.  If you prefer to order a chanter that has a special ferrule or sole or made from wood ...you can order it directly from Dunbar Bagpipes.  You will use your Practice Chanter for the duration of your playing career, making this a sound investment. With proper care this chanter will last for many, many years!

The Practice Chanter is the instrument used for learning and mastering the fingering techniques and learning the tunes you will transfer to the Great Highland Bagpipe.

If you are just starting on your journey...it's best to wait on the order of a full set of bagpipes.  When you are ready to 'get up on pipes' we're here to assist you in your choices.

If you're prepared to purchase your first set now or wish to upgrade what you're playing...we're glad to offer you expert advice.

Selecting a quality instrument is a very important process and a pretty big financial commitment.  You'll want to make sure you're getting exactly what you want!

Our teaching philiosophy and materials partner those at The Bagpipe Place.  Ron (Ringo) Bowen has developed an excellent presentation for beginning piping students of all ages.  Please visit his site  to view and print the lessons available.  We will use these as a reference and tutor.  It's also the best resource for learning everything you wanted to know about the bagpipe.
